Michigan Schools Reduce Costs
Schools in Michigan Ann Arbor to DeWitt are looking for ways to stretch their budgets, accountability meet national standards and still provide children with practical skills for the future. The different ways school districts in Michigan are approaching this dilemma are as varied as the schools themselves. Of sharing classroom space with the subcontracting work, the task of running a public school system the size Michigan schools is changing with the times.
TECHNOLOGY FOR SCHOOLS FREE OF MICHIGAN
Every year each district in Michigan Schools must dip into their operating budget to pay licensing fees for computers in the district to use the applications of Microsoft ® Office. Last year, that cost each Michigan School District about $ 24,000, a price that is expected to double by next year. DeWitt Public Schools has found a way around that. Microsoft, OpenOffice.org Project allows a district to download the complete software for free. All schools in Michigan can take advantage of these savings cost and install the application on all computers, as well as student homes.
Superintendent of Schools DeWitt Tina Templin says, "Our Students are expected to be versatile in a variety of technological tools to graduation, not only promotes the application states. "Open Office is considered the world standard. All schools in Michigan are likely to be interested in saving costs of software that prepares students for success.
OUTSOURCING OF MICHIGAN SCHOOL BUS
In Michigan, the schools look at ways to eliminate costs, it is no surprise that transportation costs are high in list. Director of Operations of the Grand Ledge Public Schools, Matt Losch, reports that his district spends an average of $ 420 annually for each student. This means that plus $ 2 million for a single district of the Schools of Michigan. With rising fuel costs, Michigan schools are actively seeking solutions.
Some responses are replacing older buses with more fuel-efficient models, outsourcing of dispatch operations, replacing mechanics employed by a private contractor and the buying in large quantities. Outsourcing is only expected to save $ 100,000 by eliminating wages and benefits.
Some of Great Michigan Schools outgoing Board members expressed concern about the contractor offers, and the need to lay off employees. Representatives of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) attended several council meetings on the issue and also expressed concern. Losch has said that any mechanic fired will have the opportunity to interview with the selected contractor.
Schools around the country are feeling the pressure to invest time and money needed to meet No Child Left Behind required to achieve higher standards and reducing class sizes. Michigan Schools effort to balance the rising costs, increased technological requirements and the ever-present issues of racial disparity. While cost-effective methods such as those listed are crucial for schools in Michigan, officials realize they are only part of the big picture.
